Watch: Redbacks’ jubilant celebration after completing a fielding challenge: Fielding is as pivotal an area in cricket as the other two departments batting and bowling. Quotations like, “Catches win matches”, “never run off a misfield” highlight the impact and paramount importance of fielding in the gentleman’s game.
With the emergence of the IPL, and other such million dollar T20 leagues, being a good fielding unit has become quite like the need of the hour. Australia have been forerunners of exceptional fielding. Over the years, we’ve seen lots of extraordinary Australian fielders taking eye-popping catches and setting new lofty standards for fielding on a daily basis.
Recently appointed Southern Redbacks head coach Jamie Siddons is looking to carry on the legacy with his innovative post-training ritual challenge for his players, one the team has now passed successfully.
Back in his prime, Siddons was a prolific run scorer. In fact, he is the third highest run-scorer in Sheffield Shield history but he was equally well renowned for his acrobatic fielding. So no wonder his grey cells came up with the challenge for his players were they were to successfully complete two lengths of consecutive catches on the half-volley without a single fumble.
Aimed at being a fun session for the squad, the players had been attempting at completing the same ever since being implemented as a routine post the training session and finally the Redbacks were able to achieve it, sparking frenzied and jubilant celebrations from the entire set of players.
Bowling coach Rob Cassell filmed the entire session where the players successfully completed the challenge on their third attempt.
