South African skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bat first in the opening Test of the series at the WACA. It looked like a good batting wicket but the way Mitchell Starc & Co. made life difficult for the Protea batsmen. Starc got them the first wicket in the very first over of the match and none South Africa’s top 4 batsmen managed to stay at the crease for a substantial duration.

When they finally had a partnership between Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock it was broken by a Nathan Lyon when Shaun Marsh took a stunner fielding at short leg. For that particular delivery Lyon changed his length and went flatter, it was pitched shorter on middle and leg Bavuma read it and went back into his crease, and was looking to turn the ball towards fine leg.

But it didn’t go as planned and the ball instead took an inside edge off his bat, hit his pads and lobbed in the air. Marsh was standing a couple of steps behind than his usual position and that probably gave him a bit of extra time. The ball was moving away from him but he showed quick reflexes to judge the motion of the ball. He dived to his right and got his hands in just at the right time before the ball could make contact with the grass.

It was a superb catch and all the Australian players including the bowler Lyon were elated. Bavuma was thus dismissed for 51, South Africa slid further in their innings and despite Quinton de Kock’s fighting 87 they were bowled out for 242.

Australian innings was powered by a quick start from David Warner while Shaun Marsh scored some patient runs. At the end of the day’s play Australia trailed by 137 runs with 10 wickets in hand.
