The umpires are the most respected gentlemen in the game of cricket. The law keepers of the game are the most responsible individuals and the highest authority in the middle. But, sometimes they are also prone to committing mistakes.

There are two on-field umpires who officiate the game – one standing at the bowler’s end and the other at square leg. This obviously is a mandatory norm and everyone knows that. However, here in this video, the square leg umpire is nowhere to be seen after the ball has been bowled.

The match was an India versus West Indies game at Jamaica. Irfan Pathan bowled a ball sliding in the leg side which was padded towards short mid-wicket. The Windies batting pair tried to steal a quick single but the fielder was agile and quickly collected the ball to hit the stumps. The Indians quickly turned to appeal as soon as the stumps were disturbed. But, to everyone’s surprise, there was no square leg umpire who would answer the appeal. The most surprised person on the field was Virender Sehwag who turned around in disbelief. The commentators as wells as the Indian players were in splits.

The umpire was Billy Doctrove, who had gone over the boundary to discuss something. However, the umpire at the bowlers end did not notice that Doctrove wasn’t in his position. Similarly, Doctrove also did not realize that the game had commenced. Luckily, the appeal was not a serious one as the batsman was shown to be safe in the TV replays. But, to be frank, no one would have anything like this before.
