Umesh Yadav was the unusual hero on the field when he brilliantly caught Corey Anderson at mid-off. Yadav is not known for his fielding efforts as much as he is known to be a pace bowler. The pacer had a key role to play India’s clinical win in the first ODI at Dharamsala. Coming into the match, New Zealand looked for a turn in fortunes. They were found wanting initially with Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya bowling excellent lines in the powerplay.

New Zealand were struggling at 47/3 by the end of 10 overs. Hardik Pandya was brought back into the attack. The comeback man for New Zealand, Corey Anderson, had no clue what was about to perspire in the over. A genuine half volley came his way on the fourth delivery as Anderson slashed hard at it. He aimed to go over mid off to break the shackles.

However, it was Umesh Yadav at mid off who stood in his way. An absolute screamer of a catch saw Anderson walk back to the pavilion after scoring just 4. Yadav dived to his right and timed his jump to perfection to snatch the ball with both hands. A brilliant effort from the man from Nagpur indeed.

Indian bowlers looked like bundling New Zealand for a low score. New Zealand were reeling on 67/7 when Tim Southee and Tom Latham rebuilt the innings. Gutsy half centuries from both players saw New Zealand post 190/10 in 43.5 overs.

India made a decent start to their run chase with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 33. It was all Virat Kohli show from thereon as the middle-order batsman single-handedly took the game away from the visitors. India won the match with ease with 6 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Well, he did drop a sitter later in the innings but that doesn’t take any credit away from his effort for the first one.
