Watch: Virender Sehwag shares a famous sledging tale with Shah Rukh Khan
Virender Sehwag was a tough nut to crack on the field. After all the feats he achieved in his career and all the bowlers he has smashed, it is absolutely needless to say that the former Indian opener was one of the best batsmen India ever produced. Fearlessness was Sehwag’s identity as a batsman but he also has a sarcastic side to his personality which nowadays can be often witnessed on social media. His outspoken nature is liked by many.
But, it is not a good idea to be at the receiving end of such sarcastic hits from Sehwag. Sledging is common on cricket field especially when two traditional rival play against each other, especially India and Pakistan. Speaking at an awards function in 2010, Sehwag revealed to the audience on such incident where he had once sledged Shoaib Akhtar during the famous Multan Test in 2004. Sehwag along with Sachin Tendulkar made the Pakistan bowlers toil in Multan.
Shoaib Akhtar’s frustration reached its peak. He was hurling short balls at Sehwag and Viru was in no mood to play any of them. Shoaib ran out of patience and constantly urged Sehwag to play the pull/hook shot. Akhtar kept on bowling bouncers and telling Sehwag, “Hook maar ke dekha” (Hook me if you can)
Sehwag pointed towards Sachin at the non-striker’s end and told Akhtar: “Wo udhar tera baap khada hai, wo maar ke dikhaega tujhe pull.” [That’s your father standing there. He will play a pull stroke against you.] A few balls later, Akhtar tried to bounce out Sachin at the first chance he got and Sachin (as Sehwag said) pulled him effortlessly for a boundary. Sehwag quietly went to Shoaib and reminded him saying: “Baap baap hota hai aur beta beta” [Father will always be the father].
Here is the video where he speaks about the incident in front of the entire Pakistan team:
