Watch: Zaheer Khan smokes Olonga for four sixes: The former Indian pace spearhead, Zaheer Khan, who is known for tormenting the bowlers with his swinging deliveries, is no less with the bat. Time and again, Zaheer had proved that with his cameos. In this video, he absolutely butchered the Zimbabwean pacer, Henry Olonga, for four consecutive sixes, interrupted by a wide, to take India to a total of 283. It was the third ODI between India and Zimbabwe at Jodhpur in 2000. Earlier in the match, Sachin Tendulkar had scored his 27th ODI century before the last over started with India at 256 for 8.
Zak took the strike and went absolutely berserk. The first ball that he faced (the third delivery of the over) was a waist length full toss which he dealth with ease and smoked it over the midwicket fence. The next ball was hit over long on for another maximum and as the commentator rightly describes it “way over the top of long on”. The next delivery, another full toss, was sent even farther and Tony Greig in the commentary quotes “Zaheer Khan is making a name for himself in Rajasthan today”; well, he certainly did that. The young Zimbabwean definitely felt the heat and bowled a wide delivery up next.
What happened on the next ball was an absolute replica of the previous deliveries of the over; although the bowler managed to pitch a length delivery, Zaheer hit it hard down the ground and the ball went sailing away into the stands. India ended with a total of 283 runs.
Zaheer’s innings of 32 off 11 balls (scoring rate: 290.90) is the fastest innings in all ODIs for an innings of exactly 11 balls. Despite his heroics, it was Olonga who had the last laugh in the match. Zimbabwe leveled the scores but lost two wickets in two balls in the final over of the match, bowled by Ajit Agarkar, before Olonga calmly tapped the penultimate delivery past mid-on for the win.
