We are still wondering how Wriddhiman Saha got infected: Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricketer, was a tad surprised after Wriddhiman Saha tested positive for COVID-19 despite the safety protocols in place for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. On May 4, before the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s match against the Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the 36-year-old Saha fell prey to the ungodly virus.

Thereafter, not only the game was cancelled, but the IPL 2021 itself was postponed, bearing in mind the gravity of the scenario. Laxman, who’s the mentor of the Orange Army, stated how the Siliguri-born Saha felt out of sorts the day before the match.

He was, thereafter, sent into isolation on an immediate basis and later he returned a positive test result. Laxman put forth his opinions in his exclusive column for The Times of India.

“I wish Wriddhiman Saha a full and speedy recovery. Wriddhi was slated to play Sunday’s match against Rajasthan Royals but felt a little under the weather on Saturday night. We immediately placed him in isolation and, despite our prayers, he returned a positive test. We are still wondering how, despite taking all precautions, Wriddhi got infected,” Laxman wrote.

Things started to go downhill after Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for the virus. Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach, Laxmipathy Balaji, and Michael Hussey, their batting coach, fell prey to the virus as well.

Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra couldn’t evade the wrath of COVID-19 either. The entire scenario was enough to set the cat amongst the pigeons in the SRH camp. Laxman admitted that there was unrest and anxiety among the Sunrisers’ contingent.

“That even carefully structured bubbles can be breached is another lesson in our battle against the coronavirus — to never let our guard down. We had full confidence in the protocols that had been put in place even when we moved from one city to another, but once we learnt of the positive tests in the KKR and CSK camp, our apprehensions mounted.

“We [SRH] had just finished a match against CSK and several of us caught up with old friends, so there was understandable anxiety and unrest until the test results were out,” he added
