The India-Windies ODI series started off with rain interrupting the Indian innings after they were put into bat first by the home side at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. By the time rain interrupted the proceedings, Indians managed to score 189 for the loss of 3 wickets in 38 overs.

The new Indian opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane gave them a steady and tremendous start for the Indians putting on 132 in 25 overs; the highest-ever opening stand for India on West Indian soil. Dhawan carried on his good form from the Champions Trophy to blast yet another fifty while Rahane also chipped in with a fifty. This was the 6th century stand in ODI cricket for the pair in just 19 innings with 4 of them coming while opening the batting.

The partnership ruptured when Rahane was deceived by a slower one from Alzarri Joseph after a brittle 78-ball 62. Dhawan looked to add yet another triple-figure score in his tally but was trapped in front by Devendra Bishoo for 87, which he scored off just 92 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

After both the openers fell, India’s scoring rate dropped with the Indian captain Virat Kohli failing to get going while Yuvraj Singh fell cheaply for 4 runs. At the time of rain break, Kohli was unbeaten on 30 off 45 balls while MS Dhoni on 2 from 3 balls.

With India losing just 3 wickets in 38 overs, they could well end up having greater benefits in case if the overs are reduced. In the case no further play in the Indian innings is possible, the Windies will be chasing 246 in the same 38 overs. Even if India come out with reduction of overs they will be defending more than what they score in the restricted overs.

Here we look at Windies’ possible targets after the Duckworth-Lewis Stern method adjustment: (Updated after interruption at 39.2 overs)
