Here are all the major stats and numbers during the first T20I between England and Windies:
A rare win for England against Windies:
2014 – Last T20I win for England against the Windies was during the 2014 Bridgetown T20I where the English team defeated the hosts by five runs while defending 165/6. Between the two wins, England lost to Windies twice in 2016 WT20 and also during the One-off T20I at home in 2017.
2 – This win England’s 2nd in the last eight T20I matches against Windies. Of those eight games, the Caribbean team won six including three while defending a total.
Another sixes record under Gayle’s belt:
105 – Number of sixes Chris Gayle has hit in his T20I career; the most by any player in this format. Gayle went past Martin Guptill’s 103 sixes with first of the two sixes he hit in this game. In the one-off T20I against England in 2017, Gayle became the first ever player to hit 100 sixes in T20I history.
Captaincy debut for Holder:
10 – Jason Holder became only the 10th player to lead Windies in a T20I game. Overall, Holder is only the 8th player to captain Windies in all the three formats.
Ducks galore:
2 – Twice in three innings, Joe Root has bagged a duck in the T20I format. Root had scores of 9 and 0 from the two matches during the home T20I series against India last year. In the first 24 T20I innings, Root had only three dismissals for single digits and never scored a duck.
6 – Carlos Brathwaite batted six deliveries for his duck; the 4th longest T20I duck by a West Indian. Johnson Charles and Chadwick Walton had a 9-ball duck each against Pakistan in 2013 and 2018 respectively. Evin Lewis too bagged a 7-ball duck during the WT20 2016 game against Afghanistan.
An interesting start to England’s innings:
17 – England scored 17 runs in the first over of their innings before losing their first wicket. These are the joint-most number of runs scored in the first over of a T20I innings that ended with a wicket.
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Perera also added 17 runs in the first over of the 2014 WT20 game against South Africa. Dilshan bagged a golden duck as he was cleaned up by Dale Steyn on the last ball of the over.
