The Windies outplayed England in every department as the visiting side were stumbled to a record 381-run defeat in the first of the 3-match Test series in Barbados. England were bowled out for just 77 in their first innings in response to Windies’ 289. The hosts decided not to enforce the follow-on and were 120/6 at a stage. However, a record partnership between Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich took them past 400. England bowled out for just 246 during the chase of the 628-run target.

A huge target and a big win:

381 – Windies’ 381-run win in this game is their biggest Test victory in term of runs at home and also the biggest win in Test cricket for any team in the Caribbean Islands. Their 343-run win against Australia in 1991 also in Bridgetown was the previous biggest win in terms of runs.


628 – The target of 628 runs set by Windies in this game is the highest they ever set in a Test match. The previous highest target they set was 617 during the 1937 Georgetown Test also against England.

A record spell of bowling from Roston Chase:

8/60 – Roston Chase’ bowling figures of 8/60 are the 2nd best by a Windies player against England in Test cricket. Only Curtly Ambrose’s 8/45 are better figures for them against England.


8/60 – Chase’s bowling figures of 8/60 are the 4th best by a spinner in Test cricket for the Windies. He is overall the 5th spinner with an 8-wicket haul in Tests. Chase and Devendra Bishoo (2016 Dubai Test against Pakistan) are the only spinners to pick an 8-fer in the last 47 years in Test cricket.


1974 – The last instance of any spinner claiming an 8-fer in the West Indies in Test cricket was 8/86 by Tony Grieg in 1974 against the hosts.


A rare all-round triple for Chase:

1 – Roston Chase became the first Windies player to score a fifty, bag a duck and pick up a 5-wicket haul all in the same Test match. Overall, Chase became only the 9th player with this rare all-round triple.


1985 – The last player before Roston to score a fifty-plus and pick up an 8-wicket haul in Test cricket was Sir Richard Hadlee during the 1985 Brisbane Test against Australia. Overall, Chase is only the 5th player with a 50+ score and an 8-fer in the same Test.

Stokes @ 3000:

50 – Ben Stokes completed 3000 runs in Test cricket during his 50th match. He is the 18th player to score 3000 runs and bag 100 wickets in Test cricket. Only three players Shakib Al Hasan (45), Gary Sobers (48) and Tony Greig (49) needed fewer games than Stokes to complete this all-round double.


The lowest total:

3 – England’s 77 is the 3rd instance of the Windies bowling out their opponent under 100 since the start of 2017. No other team have bowled their oppositions under 100 more often in this span. England and Bangladesh are the only teams to be bowled out under 100 on two different instances in this span.


A wicketless day:

344/0 – The 3rd day of this Test had 0 wickets to fall in the day’s play. It is the 24th instance in Test cricket where no wicket fell in full day’s play. The 344 runs scored during the day is the 4th most among those 24 occasions.
