Woman cricketer Durga Bhavani commits suicide in Andhra Pradesh: Cricket hits another black spot, as a 25-year-old woman cricket player Durga Bhavani who had represented her home state Andhra Pradesh in Ranji Trophy, allegedly committed suicide today at her residence in Gunadala area, Vijaywada, in Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The incident was reported to police by her brother. Some family issues could be the reason behind the woman taking the extreme step, Guru Praksh, Investigation Officer attached with Machavaram Police station said.

The police is yet to record statement of her husband Satya Prasad, a sports journalist. Her body has been sent for post mortem, the officer said. A case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered and investigations are underway, he added.

This is not the first time that a woman cricketer has committed suicide. Last year a female Pakistani cricketer had committed suicide by drinking acid, she was under extreme stress after an administrator sued her for pursuing a sexual harassment case against him, her had reportedly cousin said.

What led Bhavani to take such a drastic step is still unknown, but cricket and society as a whole are on the losing side. Durga Bhavani’s brother did not suspect anyone’s hand behind the death of his sister and the police believes that family problems might have pushed Durga Bhavani to take the extreme step.
