Women's World Cup 2022: Chinelle Henry takes an excellent catch off her own bowling to dismiss Sophie Devine
Devine had scored a century but her wicket turned the game on its head.
The ICC Women’s World Cup got off to a brilliant start with the hosts New Zealand and West Indies playing out a thriller. West Indies won the game eventually by three runs thanks to Deandra Dottin’s excellent last over. Apart from her heroics in the final over, the Caribbean players played some superb cricket to beat the White Ferns and one of them was Chinelle Henry who took a brilliant catch off her own bowling to dismiss Sophie Devine.
The said catch was taken in the 45th over of New Zealand’s innings. Being asked to chase 260 by the West Indies, the home side managed to stay in the chase at all times, however, a caught and bowled dismissal to send Devine, back to the dressing room pretty much was the highlight of the day.
Devine who had batted brilliantly until her dismissal racked up a brilliant century to keep her side in the game. Just when the right-handed batter appeared to be taking the game away from the opposition, Henry completed a catch off her bowling and that too on the second attempt to send her packing.
The ball was delivered on a good length to which Devine who was a little early on the drive ended up lofting the ball to the left of the bowler. While still in her follow-through, Henry stuck her left-hand out. The ball hit her hands and rebounded back in her direction.
However, she did extremely well to hang on to the rebound by getting her right hand across even as she tumbled. Though the third umpire’s intervention was needed, the eventual dreaded ‘red signal’ sent Devine on her way out.
Women’s World Cup is underway on the back of a thriller
Post Devine’s dismissal, Katey Martin and Jess Kerr continued to show some fight playing some gritty counterattacking cricket. However, they proved to be unsuccessful in their pursuit of the target with West Indies winning the game by the barest of margins, three runs. The game ended up going right into the last over.
West Indies opener, Hayley Matthews, was named the player of the match for her stellar knock of 119 in 128 balls laden with 16 fours and one six.
