Women’s World Cup: NZ Head Coach Bob Carter steps down after team’s dismal outing in mega tournament
New Zealand women finished their campaign at number six place in the points table.
After the White Ferns failed to qualify for the semi-finals at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 in their backyard, the team’s head coach Bob Carter stepped down from his position.
The New Zealand women ended their campaign at the No. 6 position in the points table, with only six points to their name. Of the seven matches that they played, the Sophie Devine-led team could manage to win only three. The teams that qualified for the semis were Australia, South Africa, England, and West Indies.
Carter served the side as the head coach for the past two-and-a-half years, and as per a report by sen.com.au, he will be returning to his role as the High-Performance Coach with the New Zealand Cricket (NZC). Carter felt that the team’s performance in the mega-event was disappointing but added that the girls had improved in many aspects since the time he took over the team.
New Zealand ended at No. 6 in the World Cup 2022
“We are moving ahead. If it hadn’t been for two or three results (including) that incredible game against England, we’d be looking forward to a semifinal. I think we’re still close but there’s been no joy. They are a great bunch to work with. It’s not really about me. It’s about what we were trying to achieve over that period of time with the White Ferns. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the White Ferns. I’ve formed some special bonds through this journey and I look forward to continuing working with our female and male cricketers in my High-Performance role,” said Carter.
After his decision, NZC confirmed on their official Twitter handle that the 61-year-old had decided to step down and that his contract had ended. Former New Zealand opener Craig Cumming had also opined his views on the women’s performance saying that it was simply not good enough for the competition.
