World Cup 2019: 5 players who might not play the tournament
These players are currently struggling to make it count in the ODIs.
Representing the country at the ICC World Cup is a dream for many players. It is, indubitably, the biggest cricketing stage ever and there isn’t a better feeling than helping the team clinch the glorious title. The cricketers strive hard day in and day out to fulfil this dream. However, it doesn’t come any easy.
Despite all the work put in, the fortunes keep eluding some cricketers. It leaves the dreams shattered, hopes diminished and the fans distressed. Be it the form or the injuries, some of the biggest names in the fraternity could be missing out on this event. With the World Cup 2019 fast approaching, here are five cricketers who might not play the tournament.
5. Angelo Mathews
Angelo Mathews is undergoing one of the lowest phases of his career at the moment. He has battled a lot of injuries in recent times and will try to come back stronger than ever now having axed from the team. However, his equation with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) seems to have worsened after the performance in the Asia Cup 2018. Sri Lanka was kicked out of the tournament right in the first round under his captaincy. The all-rounder only managed to score 38 runs in two games in the tournament.
He was subsequently dropped from the side citing ‘fitness issues’ and ‘poor running between the wickets’ as the primary reasons. Mathews has scored 315 runs in 8 innings this year of which 176 runs came in just two innings. The consistency and trust issues have been surfacing time and again. Furthermore, he doesn’t add the same kind of value to the side with him, not bowling. He has picked only 3 wickets since the start of 2017 of which two came in just one inning.
