World Cup 2019: Joe Denly reacts to his ouster from England squad
Denly was not up to the mark in the recently concluded 5-match series against Pakistan and hence had to bear the brunt.
The ICC World Cup 2019 is just a few days away and will be played in England Wales with hosts England playing the first game of the tournament on May 30 against South Africa. The England team were also the last ones to announce their 15-man finalized squad for the tournament, as it came after the 5-match ODI series against Pakistan.
England is the top-ranked ODI side and is going into the tournament as one of the favourites to not only reach the semi-finals but also win the tournament being the hosts. The last two editions of the tournament have been won by the hosts with India winning in 2011 and Australia in 2015 and this puts additional pressure on Eoin Morgan and his side in the upcoming quadrennial event.
The series saw many ups and downs and verification that Jofra Archer must go to the World Cup at any cost and he was picked over David Willey in the final squad named for the ICC event. Another player, who was named in the initial squad and was left out of the final one, was of all-rounder Joe Denly. Liam Dawson was named in the final 15.
Denly gives his reaction at being left out of World Cup
Joe Denly recently had a late surge in his career as he was called out of nowhere in the T20s against Sri Lanka and then has gone onto make his Test debut against West Indies making 112 runs. He has made 293 runs in 13 ODIs and 92 runs in 10 T20Is for England. He has also been successful as a leg-spinner in T20Is for England, picking 7 wickets.
Denly played in the recently concluded ODI series against Pakistan, but was not successful with either bat or ball during the series and hence was left out of the upcoming ICC tournament. Denly took to Twitter and posted, “Obviously disappointed not to be involved with England at the #CWC2019 but wish the boys every bit of success 🙌🏻 Very excited to get back with @KentCricket and get stuck into the county championship!”
England, meanwhile, has gone ahead with the much-predicted side which saw Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Liam Dawson being the spin options and Archer aiding the fast bowling unit comprising of Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett, Tom Curran, and Chris Woakes, with Ben Stokes as the fast bowling allrounders. The three lions’ side will open their account in the tournament opener on May 30 against South Africa at Kennington Oval, London.
