World Cup 2019: Kagiso Rabada vows to be fit in time for the tournament
Rabada had to miss the business end of the IPL due to a back injury.
Kagiso Rabada’s back niggle was a huge setback not only for Delhi Capitals but also a mighty scare for South Africa ahead of their World Cup 2019 campaign. With just days left before the mega-event gets underway, Rabada gave the Proteas team-management all the more reasons to worry about when he complained of a back niggle. The fears only grew when Rabada missed DC’s clash against Chenna Super Kings.
A worried South African team-management then asked the Capitals to send the scan reports to check them before deciding to recall their pace spearhead. As a result, Rabada would miss the upcoming playoffs for Delhi Capitals. Missing Rabada would be a big blow for Delhi who made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Rabada is still the leading wicket-taker in this year’s IPL, having captured 25 wickets from 12 games.
But while the Proteas pacer will miss the remainder of the IPL, he looks set to play the World Cup. The right-arm pacer himself took to Instagram to allay the fears surrounding his fitness, saying that his back is good. Rabada also confirmed that leaving the IPL was just a precautionary measure.
“IPL was really fun! Extremely glad for the opportunity! Sad to leave but good to be home! Bittersweet,” wrote Kagiso Rabada before adding: “Regarding my back, I’m good – precautionary is all. Will be supporting the boys all the way! @delhicapitals”
Other fitness concerns for South Africa:
Rabada was not the only fitness concern for South Africa. Veteran pacer Dale Steyn is also sidelined with a shoulder injury. Steyn also had to leave IPL midway after he was signed up as an injury replacement by Royal Challengers Bangalore. On the other hand, Lungi Ngidi (Chennai Super Kings) and Anrich Nortje (Kolkata Knight Riders) missed the entire IPL with their respective injuries.
