Wriddhiman Saha has been Team India’s preferred wicketkeeper ever since MS Dhoni called it time on his Test career. After a good 2016-17 season with the No.1 team, the Bengal cricketer hasn’t played a game since the first Test in South Africa played in January this year. He has struggled with injuries since and couldn’t feature in the last two Tests on the tour and neither the historic match against Afghanistan in Bangalore. Saha wasn’t picked in the Indian squad for the tour of England and will now have to undergo a surgery to recover from the injury.

He will leave for Manchester tomorrow (July 30). The date of the surgery will only be finalised after Saha meets Dr Lennard Funk who will be treating him for posterosuperior labral tear. The 33-year-old will be accompanied by Yogesh Parmar, who is an assistant physio at the National Cricket Academy. They are expected to stay in Manchester for a couple of weeks before returning back home.

Saha has played some cricket this year which includes the Indian Premier League (IPL). He took the field in 11 matches for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and often batted at the top. He didn’t have a really good time scoring just 122 runs at a paltry average of 15.25. The team expected him to go out there and express himself with the field restrictions in place, but he wasn’t quite able to justify his place in the XI.

Saha’s career

The man known for his sound glovework made his Test debut back in 2010 but only played games where Dhoni wasn’t available until December 2015. He had earned a lot of praise for his abilities behind the wickets both against spin and pace and thus became the best man to fill in for Dhoni.

Thus far in his career, Saha has featured in 32 Tests and accumulated 1164 runs at an average of 30.63, he has three hundreds to his name which includes a century in Windies. He was really consistent with the bat during the long home season during which they played 13 Tests and will be hoping to get back on the field soon enough and earn his place back in the team.
