Yuzvendra Chahal speaks in detail at the pre-match press conference
Chahal spoke about various facets in the series right from his bowling plan for Maxwell to David Warner’s poor form.
After having gained an unassailable lead of 3-0, India would now be looking forward to a whitewash against the Aussies. Having won 9 consecutive games on the trot, India would also be looking to achieve their best winning streak as they step into the field on Thursday for the fourth One-Day International at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal spoke to the media at the pre-match press conference. He spoke about various facets in the series right from his bowling plan for Maxwell to David Warner’s poor form, right from Indian batting lineup to his chemistry with spinning partner Kuldeep Yadav. Here’s what Chahal had to say:
On Maxwell becoming a bunny
Glenn Maxwell has become Yuzvendra Chahal’s bunny in the ongoing ODI series. The swashbuckling batsman has been dismissed by the leg-spinner in all three games. Sharing his bowling plan to Maxwell, he told, “My plan to Maxwell is not to bowl at the stumps. That’s a wrong area. I tend to bowl outside the off-stump and I vary my pace. I know that if I can bowl 2-3 dot balls, he will step out and try to play an aggressive shot. However, in order to beat the batsman, the line and length have to be perfect.”
On Warner’s poor form in the series
“Warner is Australia’s key player. When he settles in, he can play the big knock. Although Aaron Finch scored a century in Indore, Warner is the most dangerous player,” Chahal said.
“He has the experience of playing in the IPL and his mindset is to attack. If he plays 40-50 balls, he can score 70-80 runs. Our main aim is to get Warner out quickly so that in the middle overs, we can maintain the pressure,” he added.
On where India have gained an edge over the Aussies
Talking about the edge over Australia, Chahal told that the Indian spinners had made a huge difference and was also quick to point out the absence of Adam Zampa.
“Our spinners have taken 13 wickets as compared to the Australian spinners. We have used the conditions much better than them. That is our plus point. Adam Zampa is the only wrist spinner in the team and he is not featuring in the team consistently,” he said.
On advantages of having a big total on the board
He also credited the batsmen for posting a good total on the board and conveyed that it made the bowler’s job easier. “If batsmen put up a good total on the board, then it gives the bowlers more confidence to bowl well. In the middle overs, we have bowled pretty well, be it the Sri Lanka series or in this series,” he said.
On India’s excellent bowling form
India has looked a completely different bowling unit in the series and Chahal acknowledged the fact. He cited an example of the last game where India restricted Australia under 300, despite conceding too many runs at the start.
“In the last game, they were 234 for 2 after 38 overs. From that position, they were restricted to 293. It was a great exhibition by medium pacers at the death. Whatever spell the spinners are getting towards the end overs, we are getting wickets,” he said.
On his spin-twin Kuldeep Yadav
The spin twins have been on quite a roll in the current series. Together, both have contributed 13 wickets in 3 games. Chahal said that they both know each other really well. “I know Kuldeep Yadav for a very long time. We have played with and against each other a lot. If I bowl first, then I tell him about kind of assistance the track is providing. If he bowls first, he does the same and what’s the right area to bowl to a certain batsman,” he said.
