8. Boucher chirps in Taibu’s ears
Wicket-keepers have always been of chirpy character, poking constantly in the batsman’s ears, trying to hinder their concentration. Mark Boucher wasn’t any different either. In the 2005 Centurion Test against Zimbabwe, the Proteas were in complete control when Boucher decided to give some lip to Tatenda Taibu.
As Taibu defended a delivery from Nicky Boje, Boucher ridiculed Taibu saying, “The only time you look to score is when you have got only one seamer on the field.” As the Zimbabwean skipper drove to the cover fielder, Boucher once again came at him, “That is a big shot, Tatenda. Where was your mouth at Cape Town when we had a full seaming attack? We have got one seamer and all of a sudden you have got a big mouth man!”
The wicket-keeper continued his verbal assault on Taibu, “you may be averaging in single figures on this tour. What are you averaging? You must know your average. Nine? Ten? Nine or 10? I think it is nine. Maybe 9.5. So, we will give you a 10!”
South Africa clean-swept the visitors in the two-Test match series. Boucher made a record 999 dismissals in his 15-year international career before an unfortunate accident ended his playing career. In December last year, the former wicket-keeper was appointed the head coach of the South African cricket team.
