7. Mohammad Kaif takes a dig at Youhana

India-Pakistan clash has always been high voltage intense games. Even with fewer matches in the past few years, there is huge hype in the buildup to the game. While India in recent years has had the upper hand on their neighbours, matches between the two sides in the decades gone by were tightly contested.

Aamir Sohail versus Venkatesh Prasad, Sachin-Shoaib rivalry, Gambhir-Afridi or Ishant and Akmal- the pressure in the game created heated moments amongst the players. However, with the players speaking the common language, there were plenty of lighter moments as well between the sides. One such rib-tickling example included Mohammad Kaif and Yousuf Youhana on Pakistan’s tour to India in 2005.

It was the second Test match of the series in Kolkata and Pakistan were set a colossal target of 422 runs. They were 178/4 and Yousuf Youhana and Asim Kamal were building a partnership to get their team out of trouble. Youhana, later converted to Mohammad Yousuf, was tackling the Indian spinners with a cautious approach and was batting at the score of 22 from 87 balls at a strike rate of 25. As Anil Kumble placed a short leg, Kaif jumped from leg slip and mocked Youhana saying “87 ball kheli hai, ek bhi chauka nahi maara, iski zarurat nahi hai”, meaning “He has played 87 balls and hasn’t hit one four yet, there is no need of short leg.”

Kaif was constantly in the batsman’s ears, and Youhana could only manage a sheepish smile. Kaif’s plan of unsettling the batter worked as a couple of balls later, Youhana was caught at short leg by Gautam Gambhir off the bowling of Kumble. Just for the record, he did manage to hit three boundaries during his 89-ball stay at the crease. India won the match by 195 runs. Pakistan recovered to win the third Test in Bangalore and drew the series.
