Australia were a force to reckon with in world cricket from 1999 to 2011 and all the other teams only competed to face Australia in the finals of the World Cup during that era. This is also a territory where MS Dhoni failed to overhaul Ricky Ponting as captain. Coincidentally, both were adjudged the Man of the Match in the first World Cup finals that they had captained in 2003 and 2011 respectively.

The MS Dhoni-led India did end Australia’s World Cup dominance by knocking them out of the 2011 World Cup with an emphatic win in the quarterfinals in Ahmedabad. Nonetheless, it needs to be noted that the class of 2011 was nowhere near the squads of the 2003 and the 2007 editions, and a few of their seasoned players were also past their prime.

Coming to their respective ODI World Cup captaincy records, India under MS Dhoni won 14 of their 17 encounters between 2011 and 2015 and has an outstanding win percentage of 85.29%. Meanwhile, the Australians under Ricky Ponting have won 26 out of 29 matches with a mindblowing win percentage of 92.85. Australia were unbeaten in the 2003 and 2007 editions.
