MS Dhoni, the captain, does not even come close to Ricky Ponting when it comes to overseas Test records. Dhoni is arguably India’s best-ever white-ball captain, but could not achieve the same amount of success in the longest format even though India had reached the summit of the ICC Test rankings under him in December 2009.

Under Ponting’s reign, the Aussies won Test series across the globe barring India. While they did win the Test series in the 2004/05 season, the triumph was registered under the stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist as Ricky was injured and only played the fourth and final Test in Mumbai. With Dhoni leading India from the front in whites, they won an away Test series in New Zealand (2008/09) and tied one in South Africa (2010/11) but faced humiliating whitewashes in England and Australia (both 0-4 during the 2011/12 season).

In the 30 Tests captained by MS Dhoni overseas between 2009 and 2014, India went on to win only six of them with a win percentage of 24. In the 38 matches led by Ricky Ponting between 2004 to 2010 overseas, the Aussies won 19 of them with an excellent win percentage of exactly 50.
