3 Uncapped players who might get a chance if Rohit Sharma becomes India's captain
There have been calls for Rohit Sharma to take over as captain, at least in white-ball cricket.
There’s always a captaincy debate around the corner these days. For various reasons, Virat Kohli is criticised and one of the biggest reasons behind the criticism is team selection. He’s often been criticised for not picking the best XI and giving players long ropes.
Yet, India have found ways to win. But they haven’t won an ICC tournament in the last six and a half years. Hence, that is another red mark in Kohli’s captaincy. Hence, there have been calls for Rohit Sharma to take over as captain, at least in white-ball cricket.
Thus, that may not happen, but here we look at three uncapped players who might get a chance if Rohit Sharma is at the helm:
1. Suryakumar Yadav
It’s surprising how Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t even come in the selection frame even once despite playing for almost a decade. He has been a consistent performer for Mumbai in domestic cricket and has been one of the key members over the last few years. He averages 43.68 in first-class cricket and 35.46 in List ‘A’ and 31.37 in T20s.
These are not outstanding numbers but it’s about the impact with Yadav. The Mumbaikar has a strike-rate of 61.76 in the longest format. In 50-over cricket, he strikes at 99.63 while it’s nearly 140 in T20 cricket. He is someone who can turn the game upside down.
Moreover, the 29-year-old has been in fine form in domestic cricket. He’s scored runs in every format and has put his name somewhere in the top as far as India selection goes. With Rohit Sharma not being scared to throw in new players and backing them, Yadav could well get a chance to don the ‘India blue’.
