With every passing day the 2019 ICC World Cup is inching ever-so closer. In the last few months leading up to the biggest cricketing tournament in the world, all eyes will be on the India team combination that’ll take on the mightiest of oppositions in an attempt to bring the shiny trophy back home. While more than one veteran is expected to make the cut, we can expect to see quite a few fresh faces this time around.

Every Indian cricketer will be putting in their hundred percent in order to play the 2019 World Cup for their nation – a feat considered to be of the highest honour. But not all of them will be able to don the blue jersey bearing their name and the helmet with the nation’s flag on it. From fitness issues to poor strings of performances in the recent past, here’s a list of Indian players who might not make it to the 2019 WC squad this time around.

1. Mohammed Shami

Pacer Mohammed Shami has been having a nightmarish time in the past couple of months. From getting embroiled in an ugly battle of words with his wife that led to police complaints to being plagued by recurring injuries, the speedster will have to pull out a rabbit out of his hat if he’s to make it to the squad for the 2019 WC. He was recently ruled out of the historic one-off Test match against Afghanistan.

Shami, who’d been a part of the 2015 India world cup squad, may as well find himself out of contention for the upcoming edition of the tournament given that he recently failed the Yo-Yo fitness test due to an injured hamstring. He had to sit out the majority of the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL), after which he underwent a rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). With a repertoire of 91 ODI wickets in 50 games up until now, it’ll be a severe blow for India if they’re unable to avail Shami’s pace and bounce on the English pitches.
