The biggest chink in India’s batting armoury has been the No. 4 spot. Many players have been tried and most of them have spectacularly failed. Shreyas Iyer is an attacking top-order batsman and a player with the temperament who can hopefully fill in this critical spot for Team India. His flawless classical strokes and drives alongside his brute power and power-hitting style of play have been a common visual to spectators of domestic cricket for a long time now.

The right-handed Mumbaikar has proved his mettle and is currently among India’s most consistent domestic performers. Iyer has had a great domestic season in 2017 and 2018 topping the run charts for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. He followed this with a great IPL where he not only scored consistently but also led the Delhi Capitals to their first playoff spot since 2012.

His performance in 2019 in West Indies for India A team scoring 187 runs averaging at 62.33 for India A  got him into the spotlight and he was rewarded with a team India cap again. Iyer hasn’t been able to book his seat in the Indian team regularly but it is now time to groom him into the role of holding the brittle Indian middle order together.
