5 Players who are hits in PSL but flops in IPL

Ever since the advent of T20 cricket, franchise cricket has grown a lot. There are now multiple T20 leagues all across the world. In fact, there are players who thrive on these leagues and tournaments and also, at times, prefer them over their respective national teams. The Indian Premier League (IPL) took the lead early in the piece and became one of the best in the business. Over the last 12 years, it’s established a legacy. Meanwhile, Pakistan Super League (PSL) has seen four seasons so far and its reputation is growing. There are players who have played in both leagues and have performed well everywhere. However, there are players who haven’t performed well in one of the leagues. Thus, here we take a look at five players who have been hits in the PSL while they’ve struggled in the IPL. 1. Colin Ingram Colin Ingram. (Photo Source: IANS) Colin Ingram has been a prolific run-getter in T20 cricket all over the world. The South African-born has played in excess of 250 games in the shortest format. He has represented as many as nine teams, including the Karachi Kings in the PSL and Delhi Capitals (which was Delhi Daredevils before) in the IPL. The left-hander has been a flop in the cash-rich IPL. He has played 15 games across two seasons (2011 and 2019) and couldn’t click in both. In his debut season, he played three games but it was earlier this year when he got an extended run. Yet, he could muster just 184 runs (12 innings) batting in the middle order for the Delhi Capitals. However, Ingram has been pretty consistent in the PSL over the last couple of seasons. He has amassed 587 runs at an average of 34.52 and at a strike-rate of 153.66. The left-handed batsman has become a key component of the Karachi middle-order. Hence, he is one of the stars that has flopped in the IPL but excelled in the PSL. 2. Tymal Mills Tymal Mills. (Photo Source: Twitter) When Tymal Mills broke on to the scene, there was a lot of hype around him. He had the ability to send down fast thunderbolts and also bowl canny slower balls bringing the pace down drastically. In fact, he had rattled someone like Chris Gayle as well before knocking him over. Hence, he was one of the biggest attractions in the 2017 IPL auctions. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) broke the bank for the left-arm pacer and bought him for INR 12 crores. However, he turned out to be a big disappointment. The English fast bowler played just five games and returned with five wickets. He was expensive as well. Meanwhile, Mills has played three seasons of the PSL so far and has been pretty successful. In fact, his numbers in the PSL are much better than his IPL numbers. In 17 innings, Mills has picked up 23 wickets which have come at a strike-rate of 16.5. Hence, it’s no surprise that the left-arm pacer is still a regular part of the PSL and not the IPL. 3. Darren Sammy Darren Sammy. (Photo Source: Twitter) Darren Sammy has been the talisman for Peshawar Zalmi ever since the PSL started. He has been the skipper for the most part of the last four years. In fact, only Sarfraz Ahmed has played more games as captain than Sammy in the history of the PSL. Moreover, Zalmi has reached the final (one win and two losses) in each of the last three seasons. The former West Indian captain doesn’t bowl much these days but is still handy with the bat. He can tonk the ball a long way and is excellent as captain. Sammy averages nearly 27 and strikes at 150.46 in 45 PSL games. He is at No. 15 in the most runs list across all PSL seasons. On the other hand, the all-rounder has played just 22 IPL games which have spanned across three seasons and for two seasons (RCB and SRH). He averages 19.67 and has a strike-rate of 122.41. Hence, there is no comparison between the two leagues for Sammy. He has enjoyed playing in the PSL and has better numbers when compared to the IPL. 4. Rilee Rossouw Rilee Rossouw. (Photo Source: Twitter) There was a point when Rilee Rossouw’s international career was on the rise. He was slowly becoming one of South Africa’s mainstays in white-ball cricket. In a little over two years, the left-handed middle-order batsman had played 36 ODIs and 15 T20Is for the Proteas. However, in 2016, he took the Kolpak route and gave up on his international career. He has been playing for Hampshire since then. He has also been actively playing T20 cricket around the world. Before he went the Kolpak way, he was a part of RCB’s squad for a couple of seasons. But Rossouw played just five games across those two seasons and could barely make an impact. But he had successful stints in the PSL. Playing for the Quetta Gladiators, Rossouw has had a good time in the PSL for the last three years. Only seven other players have more runs than him in the history of the tournament. Overall, he has amassed 750 runs at an average of 34.09 in the PSL. 5. Joe Denly Joe Denly. (Photo: Kuntal Chakrabarty/IANS) At the moment, Joe Denly might have established himself as a Test player. But he is a pretty good white-ball cricketer as well. He can contribute well with the bat at the top of the order. In fact, he has more than 5000 T20 runs as well. Denly has played one season each in the IPL and PSL. Denly played the PSL last year when he represented the Karachi Kings. He scored 323 runs in the season and was pretty consistent. He was solid at the top of the order and invariably gave his side good starts. On the other hand, Denly’s maiden IPL stint and IPL debut was one to forget. The cricketer from Kent played just one game in the entire season. Walking out to bat at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Denly was out first-ball. He didn’t get to bowl either. Hence, it was a forgettable IPL debut.
