5 Versions of unconventional cricket: Let’s go down the lane and recall those memories of broken windows and lost balls. Cricket is a game that unites the entire world. From New Zealand to Nepal, we all have grown up playing these versions of cricket. If Rohit Sharma played the ball past the lane then Michael Hussey was busy picking on the bowlers somewhere in Queensland. From Backyard cricket to Beach Cricket, these versions are a hit among cricket lovers. Lets relive the journey once again. Here are 5 versions of cricket which we love watching. 1. Backyard Cricket: Justin Langer started his unofficial cricket carrier by competing with his friends around the backyard. Ask Matthew Hayden, he will tell you how he belted his brother around the park and on occasions lost his off-stump too. The culture of backyard cricket is not only with Australia. From the lanes of B.G.Colony to the farms around Ahmedabad, you will come across many match winners. A few rules: One drop one hand: Catches must be taken one-handed if the ball comes off the house/tree/fence or ground. Out of the fence.Wait!That’s out: Often we got out in this fashion. If you hit it over the fence you’re out and you have to get the ball. Now that’s a pain! You can’t go out first ball: No. Just not possible. After all who likes to sit at the dig out. Poor bowler! Last man’s tucker: You can bat yourself to a gritty half century. 2. French Cricket: This game may vary from place to place or say people to people. In India, we often call it “All fielding cricket”. Pocket-friendly and popular: The game needs one batsman and any number of fieldsmen. No stumps or pitch are required. Sounds fun? Fair enough: If the batsman misses the ball they are not allowed to move position. On your mark: Whoever retrieves the ball becomes the next bowler from the location they retrieve the ball. Reward for the bowler, for a change!: A person who gets the batsman out comes in as the next batsman. 3. Beach Cricket: We have witnessed legends like Ian Botham, Courtney Walsh, Graham Gooch and Richie Richardson play in the beaches and showcase few tricks. Hard and bouncy: The matches will be played on plastic matting. Full strength: Each team will include six players. That’s out: Hitting into the water can be given out. 4. That is 4 quarters of 10 overs each. 13 players per team consisting of: 3 batsmen, 2 allrounders, 3 bowlers, 1 wicket keeper, 4 fielders.3. 4 stumps and 3 bails. No lbw rule. If a no-ball is bowled, next ball is a free hit (can’t be dismissed unless run out). Wides are 2 runs credited to the batsman on strike. 11 players are in the field at any one time with the option of 2 on free interchange. Quarter and three-quarter time, 5-minute interval. Half-time, 10-minute interval. Batting: Only 5 batsmen (the 3 batsmen and 2 all-rounders) to bat with 2 innings each available. When out, batsman rejoins the batting order. Must lose 10 wickets to be all out (over the 2 innings). The last man in bats alone, with the previous man out acting as runner. Each batsman, in his 1st innings, must score 20 off his first 25 balls or he is deemed “struck out” and dismissed. If caught inside the Max zone, the batsman is not out and scores 6. Bowling: 5 bowlers (the 3 bowlers and 2 all rounders) must be used. There must be at least one slow bowler. 5 overs per bowler are available allowing a maximum spell of 3 overs at any time. A bowler can be changed after 4 balls of any over during the crucial last 10 overs at any time. [Nothing mentioned about how this affects the 5-over rule per bowler]. It seems that the designated fielders may bowl in these circumstances. Run-ups start inside the inner grid. Fielding: In the first 10 overs, 2 fielders allowed outside the grid. In the last 10 overs, 4 fielders allowed outside the grid. If any fielder hits the stumps the ball is either dead or the batsman is out. No fielder may be inside the Max zones at the point of delivery. Interestingly, New Zealand hosted India in the year 2002 to play this form of cricket. “Little Master” Sachin Tendulkar top scored with 72 off 27 balls, but New Zealand had the last laugh as they clinched the match by 21 runs. 5. Hong Kong Super Sixes: The Hong Kong Super Sixes is an annual 10-team international (12 since 2011) cricket tournament held at the Kowloon Cricket Club and fully sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. The tournament has many viewers, with rules and a venue that excites aggressive batting and high scoring. Because every player (except the wicket-keeper) is required to bowl one over, the format suits all-rounders. Games are played between two teams of six players, and each game consists of a maximum of five six-ball overs bowled by each side (eight-ball overs in the final match). Each member of the fielding side bowls one over, with the exception of the wicket-keeper. Wides and no-balls count as two runs. If five wickets fall before 5 overs are completed, the last remaining batsman bats on with the fifth batsman acting as a runner. He always takes strike. The innings is complete when the sixth wicket falls. Batsmen retire not out on reaching 31 runs. The idea being to reach 36 runs by hitting 6 sixes. A retired batsman can return to the crease after lower-order batsmen either retire or are out. A tournament points system awards two points for each match won. Pakistan and England have won the tournament five times each while South Africa have clinched victory four times. Australia, SriLanka, West indies and India had their hands on the cup one time each. A much-loved form of cricket, the likes of Robin Singh, Reetinder Sodhi and Umar Akmal have played major roles for their respective sides in this version of cricket.
