A triple hundred, a demolition job, ending an era and yet another heart break
Down the years, 29th March is regarded as one of the red letters day in the history of cricket. Cricket Tracker takes a look at the facts and lists a few top memorable moments of this day.
1994: Fee Faa Fo Fum
15 overs left for the close of play, 194 to chase with a day in hand and a win in sight. One of the perfect examples of swing bowling display was on offer as Curtly Ambrose, lifted up by spirited crowds claimed five wickets, that included Mike Atherton, Robin Smith, Alec Stewart, Graeme Hick and Jack Russell. By the end of the day, England finished on 40-8 before getting packed for 46 in the next morning.
1994: Allan Border calls it time
It was the last day on the field for one of the true champions, cricket has ever produced. After some slow batting by South Africa, it was time for Allan Border to bid farewell to the world with some fine display of batting in Durban. He scored 42* in his final test innings and took the records of most caps at the time (156), most runs (11,174) and most appearances as captain (93) with him.
2004: First 300 by an Indian
On the second day of Multan test, Virender Sehwag became the first Indian to smash a triple century in test cricket when he launched a hapless Saqlain Mushtaq into the stands over mid-wicket for a six. On his way to 309, he went past Sunil Gavaskar’s 236, Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 not out and VVS Laxman’s 281. The fabulous knock included 39 hits to the fence and 6 hits into the stands.
