Aaqib Javed to coach Bangladesh for seven to ten days

43-year old former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed has reportedly agreed to coach the Bangladesh cricket team on a short-term basis. Javed was earlier linked with the position of Bangladesh bowling coach following the resignation of Zimbabwean Heath Streak. However, the 43-year old turned down the offer from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to take up the role of the director of Cricket Operations for the PSL side Lahore Qalandars.

Aaqib Javed has showcased his impeccable coaching abilities when he served as the head coach for the United Arab Emirates in the 2016 edition of the Asia Cup. The UAE side beat all odds and qualified for the main draw ahead of strong favorites Afghanistan. However, things did not go as well for them in the World T20 in India (shortly after the Asia Cup) as they failed to make it past the group stages, a performance that led to Javed’s eventual resignation from the post. At that time, he had hinted about taking up short-term roles having already quit as the head coach of United Arab Emirates in April.

The same was confirmed by the CEO of the Bangladesh Cricket Board – Nizamuddin Chowdhury who released a statement that Javed would serve a short-term coaching role for a period of seven to ten days. The statement also went on to reveal that Javed would spend some time with the fast bowlers of the national squad at the BCB’s High-Performance Unit.

“He will be arriving tomorrow, and stay for seven-ten days,” Chowdhury said. “He will be coaching fast bowlers from the high performance as well as the national team.”
