AB de Villiers has no regrets about his International retirement
AB is excited to see the South African team in action in the World Cup.
The former South African captain has no regrets with regards to his decision to call it time on his international career that he did last year. It was definitely a shocker for his fans all around the world, who expected to watch AB de Villiers in action in the 2019 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Under de Villiers South Africa had reached their fourth semi-final in the World Cup history. It, however, resulted in a defeat yet again.
The very elegant yet entertaining batsman Abraham Benjamin de Villiers graced the world of cricket since his international debut in 2004. He might have earned his ‘360 degrees’ fame only after the fans took to the expanse of the shortest format, but he was always the prolific player for his team. The 47 international hundreds across ODIs and Tests speak for themselves and it is undeniable that South African Cricket was reduced the day he left.
Fans kept praying for a comeback of their favourite batsman in the World Cup 2019 despite his retirement, but de Villiers was unmoved and remained sorted about his decision.
He explained his decision by saying, “You can’t keep everyone happy and it’s part of life, I guess. But one thing is for sure, I’m happy and confident that I made the right decision. I have enjoyed sitting on the side and have chatted to some of the players after the game and still feel involved. It’s great to see that the boys are doing well and, from my side, there are no hard feelings.”
Excited to watch South Africa in the World Cup
“I can’t wait to watch the boys go to England and win the World Cup,” de Villiers spoke about his excitement to watch his team in action during the big event. “I will be the biggest supporter of the gents while they play and hopefully, they will lift the coveted trophy. I am proud and absolutely impressed with the way in which the Proteas have become a more diverse team, but not surprised.”
“I have no regrets. I understand there were some emotions from the public when I retired, but ultimately, I had to be true to myself and what I felt 10 months back. It was time to move on. I respect everyone’s opinions and emotions. Some said I should have gone on for longer, whereas others understood where I was coming from,” AB told Sport24 when asked about his retirement decision.
