In the last decade or so, cricket had the privilege of witnessing the exploits of AB de Villiers, who many a time mesmerized people with his flawlessness, creative thinking and indomitable spirit. He broke many hearts by announcing his retirement earlier this year leaving a humongous void in South African cricket.

Over the years, people tried drawing parallels between de Villiers and other greats of the game, only to realize that he was special and incomparable. Yet, the debate over who was the best in the generation among him and Virat Kohli was always on, but the South African legend always picked his RCB teammate and friend ahead of him.

Although the 34-year-old will not be representing his national side now, he will continue to take part in various T20 leagues across the globe, including the highly lucrative Indian Premier League. He will continue to don the red jersey alongside Virat for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

ABD’s verdict on the “GOAT” debate

ABD was recently was asked about who was Cristiano Ronaldo and who was Lionel Messi among himself and Kohli. To which, he gave a cheeky response saying Kohli would be Ronaldo and compared himself to the Argentine superstar. He also picked Messi as his favourite player and had his say in the eternal “Greatest ever” debate constituting Ronaldo and Messi.

This has been one of the most intriguing debates over the last decade in the world of sport and not many could accurately pick one among them. Both had achieved unattained heights in Football and kept setting new standards for the younger generations to look up to. Both players have won a plethora of trophies at club level and won the prestigious Ballan d’Or award five times each.

With Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid this summer, he sailed all the way to Italy for a new challenge with Juventus. A lot of football pundits hailed his competitive spirit to opt for a new challenge at the age of 33 and given he can help Juventus win the Champions League, he will add a feather in his cap which could put him ahead in this debate.
