Afghanistan to tour West Indies in June 2017

The cricket boards of West Indies and Afghanistan have agreed to play their first ever bilateral series in June 2017. The tour will comprise of 5 One Day International matches and 3 Twenty20 International games in West Indies. The last time these two teams met was in the World T20 2016, where the Asian team shocked the West Indies as they won the low-scoring thriller by 6 runs.

Speaking about the tour with the World T20 champions, Nasimullah Danish, Chairman of Afghanistan Cricket Board, said, “Playing with Twenty20 champions will boost technical prospects for us,”

While CEO of the ACB, Shafiq Stanikzai, said that the series will be a major one which features the best players from both the teams and also thanked the West Indies Cricket Board for accepting the tour.

“This is a major series with very attractive teams featuring some of the world’s best players. We look forward to some very entertaining cricket in T20 and ODI. On behalf of Afghanistan Cricket Board, I am very thankful to West Indies Cricket Board for agreeing to be hosts for the series.” Shafiq Stanikzai said.

Afghanistan recently toured Ireland, where they leveled the 5-match ODI series 2-2 after a frustrating rain-abandoned opening game. The Asghar Stanikzai-led side hasn’t lost the last four bilateral series that they have been involved in.

West Indies Cricket Board CEO, Michael Muirhead is delighted to agree for the series with Afghanistan as he stated that “this series will add to the variety of cricket our teams will be playing for the next year and we are happy to be able to have teams visit the region to add exposure for all our players.”

The series is all set to start mid-June of 2017 and the specific dates and venues are yet to be announced. The Caribbeans are currently playing a 4-match Test series against India.
