Afghanistan's historic first Test likely to be held this year
Earlier it was speculated that the match will most likely be played in 2019.
In a very delighting news for the cricket fans, team Afghanistan could potentially play their first ever Test match this year. The news comes as a massive one considering the way the young side has evolved over the last few years. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier confirmed that they would be hosting Afghanistan in their first-ever Test match.
However, the dates for the same were not revealed. Also, it was speculated that the match will most likely be played in 2019. This was said largely due to the packed schedule of the Indian cricket team. Now, as per the recent reports in Sportstarlive, the BCCI has found a little window in their playing calendar to accommodate the Afghanistan series.
Albeit there is no confirmation on the same, there are reports that the match will be played in June 2018. Following the fixture/s against Afghanistan, team India will tour Ireland and subsequently land in England for a full tour. The venue and the dates for the match against the Afghanistani team is yet to be ascertained.
“The venue and the date for that tournament will be announced shortly. It is likely to be held around that time (June) only,” BCCI acting president, C. K. Khanna, told Sportstar.
Name of the series
Furthermore, there have been discussions about what the series between India-Afghanistan would be called. The two nations have very cordial political relations. Some of the sources remarked that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had proposed the BCCI to name the series after two of the iconic leaders of the country. The ACB proposed the BCCI to name the series after Narendra Modi and Ashraf Gani.
The BCCI officials, however, have kept mum on this particular issue. It will be worth seeing what name is eventually finalized. More importantly, the fans would be hoping for the confirmed dates for the match to be announced soon.
“There has been a proposal from the ACB regarding naming the tournament after the country heads, but nothing has been decided yet,” the source said.
