Controversial England batter, Alex Hales, has been alleged of naming his black dog ‘Kevin’, a racial slur, mostly used by Gary Ballance at Yorkshire. The England and Wales Cricket Board recently banned Yorkshire from hosting all international and major cricket matches.

They also suspended Ballance after all the accusations brought in by teammate Azeem Rafiq. In a statement, the ECB said that it was unhappy with the way Yorkshire dealt with Rafiq’s case.

On Tuesday, November 16, Rafiq spoke before MPs under parliamentary privilege at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Select Committee. In the hearing, Rafiq opened up on a number of matters and spoke about both Ballance and Hales when talking about the ‘institutional racism’ at Yorkshire.

Gary and Alex Hales got very close to each other playing for England, says Azeem Rafiq

“Gary’s conduct was so disgusting I raised it with a shared agent we had. I felt isolated, humiliated at times,” Rafiq was quoted as saying, Mirror reported.

“On tour, Gary Ballance walked over and said: ‘Why you talking to him?’ Going past a corner shop, I was asked if my uncle owned it.

“Kevin was something Gary [Ballance] used for people of colour in a derogatory manner. All the time,” he stated.

“Gary and Alex Hales got very close to each other playing for England but I understand Alex went on to name his dog Kevin because it was black. It is disgusting how much of a joke it became,” Rafiq added.

Back in 2018, Hales took to Instagram and wrote, “Shoutout to big Kev on national pet day! #nationalpetday.”

Hales has been at the forefront of a number of controversies, especially over the last couple of years. He was left out of the England national squad for the 2019 World Cup after he was found guilty of taking banned substances. Thereafter, Hales has plied his trade across a number of tournaments around the world.

He played in the BBL, CPL, PSL, but hasn’t been able to find his way back into the Three Lions’ squad. Eoin Morgan, the England limited-overs’ skipper, has spoken a lot about the matter. Hales has played 11 Tests, 70 ODIs and 60 T20Is for England.
