Analysis: ICC World T20 2016 team of the tournament

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the ICC World T20 XI. A select group of former cricketers and commentators chose the teams on the basis of the players’ performances in the World T20. The delightful news for the Indian fans is that Indian batting ace Virat Kohli, who was awarded the ‘Player of the Tournament’ trophy, was named as the captain of the team. Another Indian to feature in the list is veteran fast bowler Ashish Nehra. The list also comprises of four players from runners-up England, two from the West Indies and one each from Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand and South Africa. Here is how the team looks like. A batsman with a great T20 reputation, Roy made 183 runs at an average of 30.50 with a strike rate of 148.78. He could fared better if he could control his erratic nature while batting which resulted in his downfall after quick starts. His best performance in the tournament was the entertaining knock of 78 off just 44 balls in the semi-final clash against New Zealand. Quinton de Kock was consistent throughout the tournament, starting off with a 31 ball 51 runs blitz against England. He continued his run making business in the following matches against West Indies and Afghanistan and ended up mustering 153 runs in 4 games at an average of 38.25 with a strike rate of around 142 in the tournament before his team bowed out. Virat Kohli (India) (Captain): Virat Kohli. (© Manjunath Kiran/AFP/Getty Images) Virat Kohli was the star of the tournament. Kohli has been in his sublime form, forming the backbone of India’s batting line-up. The Delhi lad struck 273 runs at a staggering average of 136.50 with an equally astounding strike-rate of 146.77, He scored three half centuries and all of them came at very crucial moments for India. Root has been a consistent performer for his team across all three formats. In the World T20, Root scored 249 runs in six games at an average of 49.80. Coincidentally, both of his defining knocks (48 runs innings in the opening match and a fighting 54 in the finals) in the tournament came against West Indies which brought him great adulation from his fans. Buttler has several times rescued his team from risky situations taking them to safety. His impact has been extraordinary from England’s perspective. Valuable knocks of 66* against Sri Lanka and 36 in the final against West Indies were the highlights of his batting performances in the tournament where he finished with 191 runs in 6 matches. His made full use of the experience of playing in the Indian conditions and gave a good all-round performance. Watson opened for Australia but did not enjoy any success. His only notable show was the quick fire 21 ball 44 run knock against Pakistan in the do-or-die match at Mohali. However, he did a satisfying job with the ball picking up wickets at crucial moments in the game. He finished with 5 wickets in 4 games at a good economy rate of 7.35. His quick cameo of 433 off just 20 ball in the semi-final against India was his significant knock in the tournament With the ball he picked up 9 wickets while maintaining a healthy economy rate of 7.87. His most noticeable performance with the ball came against Afghanistan were he picked his best figures of 2/23. The Kiwi left-arm spinner was an unknown commodity before he weaved his magic against the Indians at Nagpur in the opening game of the Super 10, registering his career best figures of 4/11. He continued to have an impact on the rival batsmen and played vital role in New Zealand dominating journey till the semi-final. Santner finished with 10 wickets in 5 matches at an outstanding average of 11.40. How did the New Zealand team fare? – World T20 2016 Player Ratings: New Zealand David Willey (England): David Willey of England. (© Julian Finney/Getty Images) David Willey finished as the fifth highest wicket taker of the tournament and was England’s most reliable fast bowler. His capability to snap early wicket and then contain runs in the death overs made him a valuable asset in the team. Willey finished with 10 wickets in 6 games. His registered his best figures of the tournament against West Indies in the final of the tournament where he took a highly impressive 3/20. Samuel Badree (West Indies): Samuel Badree. (Photo Source: Twitter) Samuel Badree, the nippy leg spinner from Trinidad, gave yet another reason why he deserves to be called as the best T20 bowler in the world. Badree looked very difficult to go after. His accuracy, subtle variations of speed and googlies made the batsman very uncomfortable in scoring runs. In all, he took 9 wickets in 6 games at an average of 13.77 while maintaining a miserly average of 5.39. He provided India with important wickets in the powerplay overs without leaking many runs. The 37-year-old finished the tournament with 5 wickets in 5 matches at a superb economy of 5.94 runs. 12th man Mustafizur Rahman (Bangladesh): Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman. (Photo by MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP/Getty Images) Mustafizur Rahman enjoyed bowling on the slower tracks. The left-arm seamer was lethal in the World T20, picking up 9 wickets in just 3 games. Mustafizur did not play in the qualifiers and was included in the playing XI for the Super 10s stage where put up some extraordinary display of bowling against Australia, India, and New Zealand.
