The Asia Cup kicked-off in style with Bangladesh making an impressive comeback to defeat Sri Lanka by a huge 137-run margin. Lasith Malinga, playing in his first International game after a year, bagged two wickets in the first over of the game. Tamim Iqbal also got injured a few overs later but Mushfiqur Rahim took his team to 261 with a magnificent 144-run knock supported by Mohammad Mithun’s 63. Sri Lanka hit 22 runs in the first two overs before the collapse. No batsman from their team crossed 30 as they were bowled out for just 124.

All the major stats and numbers recorded during the opening game of the Asia Cup 2018:

1 – Mushfiqur’s 144 is the highest individual score by a Bangladesh player in Asia Cup breaking his own record of 117 which he scored in 2014 against India.

More numbers from Mushfiqur’s innings: Stats: Mushfiqur Rahim’s record-breaking innings stands out for Bangladesh

1 – Bangladesh’s innings was the first in the history of Asia Cup where two wickets fell in the first over of an innings. Two wickets fell in the first over of an innings on two different occasions during the Asia Cup T20 in 2016 but never before in the 50-overs format.

2* – Tamim Iqbal’s two runs are the fewest an opener made in a completed ODI inning despite remaining unbeaten. Nick Knight was retired hurt on the first ball of England’s 154-run chase against New Zealand in 1997 Auckland ODI. He resumed his innings on 1* despite a finger injury when England were 133/9 but didn’t add a run before his team was bundled out for 144.

8 – Lasith Malinga’s four-wicket haul was his first against Bangladesh in the ODI format. He now has 4-fers in this format against eight different teams. Brett Lee has taken four-fers against ten different teams including the ICC World XI while Mitchell Johnson and Allan Donald have against nine and eight teams respectively.

More numbers from Malinga’s performance on comeback: Stats: Lasith Malinga returns to International cricket with a 4-wicket haul in Asia Cup opener

137 – Bangladesh’s 137-run win in this game is their biggest in the Asia Cup surpassing the 116-run win against Hong Kong in the 2004 edition. This was also the first 100-run defeat in the Asia Cup for Sri Lanka.

144 – Mushfiqur Rahim ending up with more runs than Sri Lanka’s total is only the 2nd instance when a player outscored the opposition’s total in an Asia Cup game. Pakistan’s Ijaz Ahmed made 124 in the 1988 Asia Cup game against Bangladesh who were bowled out for 111 in reply. It was also the first such instance when a Bangladesh player did so in this format.
