Australia and South Africa will be kick-starting their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign against each other. The encounter, which will be the first of the Super 12 stage, will be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on October 23. Unlike the previous ICC events this encounter, these two sides aren’t touted favourites heading into the competition. However, there are some serious match-winners in both sides who’ll be raring to make mark in UAE. While Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc are the players to watch out for from the Australian camp, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso are the South Africans in focus.

Head to Head record:

Australia dominate South Africa in terms of head-to-head record in T20Is. These two teams have played 22 T20I matches against each other. Out of which 13 have been won by Australia and South African have won eight games. One of their encounters got abandoned. As far as World Cups are concerned, Australia and South Africa only met once and the Aussies won that encounter by eight wickets.

Top performers:

Australian opener David Warner has an incredible record against South Africa. He has scored the most runs (457) in the clashes. Among active cricketers, the southpaw is followed by Quinton de Kock (351) and Aaron Finch (295). Among the bowlers, Pat Cummins has picked up the most wickets (12). He is followed by Ashton Agar (9), Imran Tahir (8) and Kagiso Rabada (8).

T20 World Cup meeting:

As mentioned above, South Africa and Australia have met just once in T20 World Cup before. The occasion was the 2012 editions and the venue was Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Aussies elected to field first after winning the toss and their bowlers justified the call. Xavier Doherty and Shane Watson made the ball talk as the Proteas side was restricted to 146/5. Robin Peterson (32 off 19) scored the most for them.

Chasing the below-par total, Australia never seemed in any sort of trouble. While David Warner went early, Shane Watson and Michael Hussey added 99 runs for the second wicket and eventually guided Australia to an eight-wicket win. Watson scored 70 runs and received the Player-of-the-match award.
