Bangladesh are all set to make their return to international cricket with their home campaign against the West Indies. The ODI series starts on Wednesday, January 20 with the first match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

The Tigers have a full-strength unit after Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin made their comebacks through the Bangabandhu T20 Cup last year. Shorfiul Islam, who shone for Bangladesh U19 and Gazi Group Chattogram, got his maiden international call-up.

Though he is unlikely to find a spot in the presence of frontline pacers like Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, among others. Bangladesh last played ODI cricket last March where their batters piled up records. It’s also Tamim Iqbal’s first chance as the one-day skipper.

As far as the West Indies are concerned, a number of their players opted out of the tour. To add insult to injury, spinner Hayden Walsh Jr was ruled out after being tested positive for COVID-19.

Jason Mohammed has been excellent for the Caribbean team in Test cricket but has a massive task at hand in the shorter formats with not such an experienced national squad to work with.

Playing Combinations for BAN vs WI

Bangladesh

Earlier, Russell Domingo, the Bangladesh head coach, hinted at including Najmul Hossain Shanto in the eleven and slotting him at number three after he smashed a ton for the Minister Group Rajshahi. Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah are expected to bat at four, five and six respectively.

It means that Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das’ batting positions need to be decided. Bearing in mind the conditions, the Tigers are likely to field a spin-heavy attack. In the pace attack, Mustafizur and Rubel Hossain are likely to lead. Taskin Ahmed also had three stitches on his non-bowling arm.

Probable XI

Tamim Iqbal (C), Soumya Sarkar/Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Taijul Islam

Bench: Soumya Sarkar/Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Mithun, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud

West Indies

The visiting team has a lot of think about to field their best eleven on Wednesday. Sunil Ambris, being their most experienced top-order batter, is pretty much a surety in the lineup. He has played against Bangladesh before during the tri-series in Dublin in 2019 and a lot will depend on the right-hander.

In Walsh Jr’s absence, Akeal Hosein has a chance of playing, being one of their only spin-bowling options in the squad. Rovman Powell is a genuine power-hitter and his role will be of prime importance as well. Alzarri Joseph will be leading the bowling attack with 48 wickets to his name.

Probable XI

Sunil Ambris, Andre McCarthy, Joshua da Silva (WK), Kyle Mayers/Nkrumah Bonner, Akeal Hosein, Jason Mohammed (C), Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder, Keon Harding

Bench: Kjorn Ottley, Kyle Mayers/Nkrumah Bonner, Jahmar Hamilton

Players to watch out for

Tamim Iqbal- Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal was in excellent form when Bangladesh last played ODI cricket in March 2020. Getting scores of 158 and an unbeaten 128, he was on top of his game. However, back then he under Mashrafe Mortaza’s leadership and this time, he himself is the skipper.

He was in good form for Fortune Barishal and he would be looking to replicate something similar in national colours as well.

Sunil Ambris- West Indies

Sunil Ambris is a calm and cool customer and he can put his head down in crisis. In 13 ODIs, the 27-year-old has 447 runs to his name at an average and strike-rate of 44.70 and 97.17 respectively.

Having also played in the 2019 World Cup, he has thrived under pressure as well. He scored an unbeaten 69 in Dublin against Bangladesh and hence, the visitors would again be pinning hopes on him.
