Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim raring to go against new-look Australia
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim raring to go against new-look Australia: Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim believes his side stands a good chance of upsetting the applecart when they take on the second ranked Australia in a Test series on their home turf next month.
The relatively inexperienced Australian team that arrives in Dhaka on September 28 will include two rookies in 22-year-old batsman Cameron Bancroft and 30-year-old pacer Andrew Fekete.
After the retirements of ex-skipper Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris, the Australian team is in a transitory phase with new replacements being summoned.
Rahim stated that perennial whipping boys Bangladesh would have been competitive even against an Australian side filled with stalwarts but now their chances of victory are brighter.
“I don’t think there will be a better opportunity to beat Australia,” Rahim said.
Australia will play two Tests in Bangladesh with the first Test from October 9-13 in Chittagong and the second from October 17-21 in Dhaka.
Recent unexpected wins against South Africa, India and Pakistan at home have pushed Bangladesh to sixth in ICC ODI rankings.
Rahim hopes that this rich vein of success in the ODI format can be carried over to the Tests where admittedly their record is poor with only one victory to boot since their inception in 2000.
“The kind of cricket we are playing right now, if we can play to the best of our ability, a victory won’t be impossible,” he added.
Bangladesh has lost all 4 Tests that they have played against Australia so far, which includes three innings defeats.
