The franchise T20 leagues are quite popular in each and every country where they are held. It has the right mix of cricket and glamour. The annual cricketing extravaganza of Bangladesh, known as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is very popular in the country which has produced many legends like Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza. On Wednesday, a massive decision was made by the BPL committee.

They canceled Barisal Bulls’ participation in the fourth installment of BPL. It is understood that the Barisal based franchise failed to pay the appearance fee, a hefty amount of money which is common in the franchise based leagues, even after getting multiple chances. As a result, the committee decided not to wait for anyone and declare their participation as null and void.

However, the owner of the Bulls is confident of making a comeback by clearing all dues by next week. “We just wanted a few more days. We hope to appear in the tournament by paying off our debts by next week,” said an optimistic owner Abdul Awal, as quoted by bdcrictime.com.

On their defence, the chairman of BPL governing council Afzalur Rahman Sinha said “During the last board meeting we had given them August 7 as deadline for submitting their dues but as they failed to do so, we have to take this decision. We have to prepare the fixture for the next edition while we have to take other preparation as well. So we decided to host the upcoming BPL with seven teams.”

No chance of a comeback for Barisal

Abdul Awal might have been optimistic about the team’s comeback, but the BPL committee members are not ready to accept any fee which will be paid now. Secretary of BPL governing council Ismail Haider Mallick cleared the intentions of his team by saying “There is no scope for them to return. We had extended their deadline on two occasions before taking this decision and we will stick to it.”
