BCCI announces whopping prize money for medal winners in Tokyo Olympics
India won a total of seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
India sent its biggest ever contingent for the Tokyo Olympics this time and the athletes have impressed big time with their performances. The country won 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals to mark its most successful Olympics ever going past the 2012 performance. August 7 was a historic day as Neeraj Chopra created history to win the Gold medal for India for the first time in 13 years.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to award the medal winners at the Tokyo Olympics. The board’s secretary Jay Shah, on Saturday evening, announced whopping prize money for all the seven winners. Neeraj Chopra, the Gold medallist, was rewarded Rs 1 crore while the Silver medal winners Mirabai Chanu and Ravi Kumar Dahiya will get Rs 50 lakh each from the cricket board.
India ace Badminton player PV Sindhu, Boxer Lovlina Borgohain and wrestler Bajrang Punia also kept the Indian flag flying high in Tokyo winning the Bronze medal. BCCI has also awarded Rs 25 lakh each to them for their excellent efforts in bringing honour to the country.
Rs 1.25 crore prize to Hockey Men’s team
Among the team events, the Indian Hockey stunned the other countries with their exceptional performance. The Men’s team lost in the semi-final to the eventual winners Belgium but they stunningly defeated Germany in a thrilling game to win the Bronze medal. The BCCI recognised their efforts as well awarding a prize money of Rs 1.25 crore to the whole team.
Indian Women’s Hockey team also would’ve been in the list if not for their close loss to Great Britain in the Bronze medal match. They lost to Argentina, the favourites, in the semi-final in a close game and defeated the favourites Australia in the quarter-final. Despite the heart-breaking loss, the whole country lauded the team even as many Indian athletes lost their medals in close matches.
This is certainly India’s best performance at the Olympics and one has to laud BCCI for this wonderful gesture towards the winners.
