BCCI confident of getting support in the upcoming ICC meet
BCCI is trying it's best to garner support for the substantial opposition of the new financial model.
After the Indian team made its way through to the finals of the Champions Trophy 2017, the Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI) is expecting some good news as well after the conclusion of ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The Indian board is set to receive the all important support it requires to be on its word in the upcoming Annual General Conference of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in a week’s time in London.
Consent of three countries
To oppose ICC’s governance policies, BCCI requires support and three-member boards- Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have agreed to give their consent to oppose ICC’s decision which isn’t in favour of the BCCI. Moreover, the richest cricket board is trying its level best to have West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to stand alongside them to ensure that the flurry of changes proposed to the governance model does not receive the necessary ratification through a voting process.
ICC’s new financial model to revamp the structure will not only cost BCCI substantial stake but also the lead to a massive shift in power equation which is anticipated to affect India badly. However, a total of four votes in favour of India will ensure that the flurry changes don’t affect them.
In the previous ICC meeting, the Indian board was in the same frame of mind as it expected that member boards will vote in its favour. However, they voted against India at the eleventh hour.
Big Three
The ‘Big Three’ model which includes- India, England and Australia were the worst hit in the new financial structure which is been prepared for next eight years. However, England and Australia didn’t oppose ICC’s decision as they weren’t losing a hefty amount. On the other side, India opposed the model because BCCI will earn no more than $410m from ICC which is much less than its previous stake.
They will thus be hoping that the parties who have given the consent now, stay the same in that hour as well. If not, the Indian board will definitely lose a humungous amount and power of decision making in the international governing body.
