BCCI confirms Women’s IPL-styled Exhibition T20 match
"It (exhibition match) will be on the lines of the IPL," the BCCI confirmed.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is very keen on developing the women’s cricket in the country. In the last couple of years, the popularity of the game among the eves has grown manifold. To popularize the sport even more, the board has taken several path breaking steps. And now, they have confirmed an exhibition match for the ladies which will be based on the lines of the IPL.
While the talks about a potential Women’s IPL is doing the rounds at the big desks, this exhibition match could potentially serve as a trailer for any such tournament in the future. As per the reports in the Indian Express, the IPL Governing Council has already passed the request to hold such an exhibition game.
The reports suggest that this exhibition match will be played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Furthermore, the BCCI has confirmed that the match will be played before the playoffs on May 22. The match will see four overseas players in each team just like the IPL. Reportedly, the BCCI has already requested the cricket boards of England, Australia, and South Africa to name their players for the match in the coming days.
“It (exhibition match) will be on the lines of the IPL. Totally there will be 10 foreign players and 20 Indian players across both teams. The Indian players will be picked by the national selection committee and the game, which will start at 2.30 pm, will be shown live,” Committee of Administrators (CoA) member and former India cricketer Diana Edulji was quoted as saying by the daily.
Women’s IPL in the near future?
In all likelihood, this step from the BCCI will give a lot of hopes to the women cricketers across the globe. The CoA head, Vinod Rai, has assured that there will be a Women’s IPL in about a couple of years. Currently, the only T20 league played by the women cricketers of the world is the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
