Perth Scorchers Cameron Bancroft picked for New Zealand tour
Wicketkeeper-batsman Cameron Bancroft has been picked as part of the 17 man squad that leaves for New Zealand on Saturday. Having rested a majority of their regulars in the T20 series against the Indians, the Aussies are expected to be even more depleted when the make the short trip to the South to New Zealand.
23-year-old Bancroft is regarded by many as an exciting Australian talent. The opening batsman, who is also an occasional wicketkeeper has performed well in the recently concluded Big Bash League with 9 dismissals in the tournament.
Cameron Bancroft first shot to fame when he represented the Australians in the 2012 edition of the U-19 Cricket World Cup. He, however, faded into oblivion and it would also seem that he has finally got his opportunity with senior players of the squad rested for the series.
However, Bancroft’s major role would require him to keep wickets, a role that is almost too comfortable in.
Speaking to the media following his inclusion, Bancroft went on to say that,” For me, ‘keeping was something I always did as a junior. I think in Twenty20 cricket one of the biggest things is being able to pick ‘Hoggy’ (Scorchers spinner Brad Hogg). I was lucky enough to play in the same club team as him so I’ve had that up my sleeve.”
In the interim, Bancroft will feature in the squad as Australia face India in the 3rd T20I at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
