‘Can’t put something like that past India’ – Graeme Swann backs India to perform well in World Cup treble
He said that the Men in Blue have formed enough depth in their ranks due to which they can do well in the mega events.
Former England cricketer Graeme Swann reckoned that Team India have the potential to perform well in the three world tournaments in the next couple of years. After taking part in the ongoing T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue will play in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia followed by the 50-over version of the mega event in 2023.
India are also a part of the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle. Swann, one of the Brits’ prolific wicket-takers during his heydays, said that the Indian players gets groomed by taking part in the Indian Premier League. The veteran said that the Men in Blue have formed enough depth in their ranks due to which they can do well in the world tournaments.
India have got the strength and depth, says Graeme Swann
“You can’t put something like that past India because of the talent you have got in your country. It’s gone from strength to strength since the IPL really got big. All the guys coming through who normally wouldn’t get to play against international standard players until they are playing for India get that jump ahead of the rest of the world when they play the IPL.
“So, India have got the strength and depth, and who’s to say they couldn’t do that,” Swann was quoted as saying in cricket.com.
Earlier this month, Rahul Dravid was appointed as the head coach of Team India. He would be replacing Ravi Shastri, whose tenure is set to end after the current T20 World Cup in the UAE. The 42-year-old Swann said that Dravid is a level-headed person unlike Shastri, who’s fiery.
“I think he’s going to be very level-headed and he’s going to get ease and calm flowing through the team. I think it’s going to be a new era. Because with Virat and Ravi Shastri, they are both very fiery, passionate guys. Rahul is a lot more collected, a lot calmer,” he added.
Dravid is set to begin his journey as Team India’s full-time coach from the home series against New Zealand starting in a few days. Back in July, Dravid coached India, led by Shikhar Dhawan, on their tour of Sri Lanka when Shastri was busy with Virat Kohli and Co. in England.
