‘Captain has voiced his preference’ – Aakash Chopra feels Team India’s next head coach is almost finalized
It seems that the captain and even a CAC member have made their minds on who should be appointed to take the team forward.
Committee of Administrators appointed Cricket Advisory Committee in order to pick the head coach for the Indian team as the tenure for current coach Ravi Shastri and support staff comes to an end after the West Indies tour. However, it seems that the captain and even a CAC member have made their minds on who should be appointed to take the team forward.
Recently, Sunil Gavaskar had called the selection committee of BCCI as lame ducks for their lack of authority in choosing a head coach and for being heavily influenced by skipper Virat Kohli. He also pointed at the committee members being bullied by the captain and other figures of the team because they are low in stature when compared to the likes of Kohli and Shastri, given their record in international cricket.
Now former India opener Aakash Chopra has also put forth his opinion on the matter of selection of the Indian coach, given that Virat Kohli has mentioned, that he would prefer Ravi Shastri continuing in this position, given the camaraderie between him and the skipper. This despite the fact that India has lost three semi-finals of ICC tournaments in 2015 World Cup, 2016 World T20 and 2019 World cup under the tutelage of Shastri.
Chopra tweeted, “Captain has voiced his preference. One of the CAC members has done the same for the position of Team India’s Head Coach. Good luck to the ones who’re still applying or have already applied.”
He cheekily took a dig at the names like Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, and Mahela Jayawardene, who are all reported to have applied for the post of Team India head coach, but with the reports of Shastri being almost confirmed to continue, thanks to the support of the captain and even a member of the Kapil Dev-led CAC, it seems that the whole process is just an exercise in futility.
Given that the record of the Indian team under the Kohli-Shastri combination is very good, but the lack of trophies in the cabinet and lack of new ideas must not be overlooked if India wishes to capture the silverware in the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2020 and 2023 World Cup.
