During India’s tour of Australia in 2014-15, Delhi-born Virat Kohli took over the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni, who retired after the third match in Melbourne. In January 2017, Kohli was also appointed as the limited-overs captain. He has been fairly decent in his role thus far. The 30-year-old has taken the team to the number one position in International Cricket Council’s Cricket Council (ICC).

Apart from winning matches with the bat, Kohli has also flourished as the skipper. However, former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble reckons Virat is still learning the tricks and the trade of captaincy. India are now scheduled to play a four-match Test series against Australia and Kumble highlighted the aspects Kohli needs to focus on in the high-voltage series Down Under.

Kumble’s words of wisdom

“I don’t think any captain or any player is a finished product. I mean you’re constantly learning and I’m sure Virat is also constantly learning from all the experiences that he’s had in South Africa and also in England. You spoke about the key moments, that’s something he’ll have to grab on the field.

He needs to identify that and possibly India got a bit complacent when they picked up to 5-6 early wickets in England and then let things drift. That’s something that I’m sure he would’ve learnt from his experience in England,” Kumble was quoted as saying in News 18.

The first Test will be played at Adelaide Oval from Thursday, December 6. Perth, Sydney and Melbourne are the venues for the rest of the three encounters. Recently, Kohli’s men played a four-day warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.

The match was drawn after the first day’s play was called off due to persistent rain. Kohli was also impressive with the bat in hand and scored 64 runs from 87 balls with seven boundaries and a six. Furthermore, he picked up the wicket of centurion Harry Nielsen.
