CPL 2020: Match 14, Barbados Tridents vs Jamaica Tallawahs, Preview- Two desperate opponents in search of rhythm

Barbados Tridents will lock horns with the Jamaica Tallawahs in the 14th league stage encounter of CPL 2020 on 27th August at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

Both the teams are in tatters and are struggling to find their rhythm in the tournament. The Tridents have been able to win only one encounter in the four they have played whereas the Tallawahs have won two and have lost as many in their four. However, the latter will enter this match with some momentum as they defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The bowlers shone in the match and the Tallawahs curtailed Warriors to an under-par total of 108 before chasing down the target with 12 balls to spare. Despite some big guns of the format such as Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite, the team has not been able to capitalise and have underperformed in the tournament.

On the other side, Barbados Tridents have had an even more disappointing run of form. They are coming into this match after a thrashing defeat from the lowest-ranked St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in their last league match. Captain Jason Holder has been incessantly criticised for his abstruse tactics on the field and though he performed as a player, he seems to have indeed failed as a captain.

He bowled only eight overs between Rashid Khan, Mitchell Santner, and Hayden Walsh Jr whereas he did not give even a single chance to Ashley Nurse as the Patriots chased a total of 152. The list of shortcomings has been getting longer for the Tridents and they need to cater to these issues before it is too late.

Opener Chadwick Walton has had a terribly cold run with the bat although the lack of suitable replacement for him has kept him in the eleven for long. His partner, Glenn Phillips has made decent contributions at the top and will be keen to continue his good run. Jermaine Blackwood did well in the last encounter as he stitched a partnership with Phillips and held one end up maturely.

Nkrumah Bonner has nothing substantial to show in the tournament thus far and he would want to shift gears with half the league stage gone. Skipper Rovman Powell failed to contribute with either bat or ball, however, he has been decent in other matches gone by. Andre Russell’s form was a massive concern for the team, though he looked good in the last two outings. Carlos Brathwaite’s bat has not performed as per his standard, though with the ball, he has made an impact.

The CPL story for all the bowlers has turned well and Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s 3 wickets at an economy of 2.75 in the last match is a testament to that. Fidel Edwards impressed as well as he scalped three wickets. Sandip Lamichhane has been amongst the wickets too and has kept things neat with his precise work.

Some runs from openers Johnson Charles and Shai Hope were positive takeaways for the Tridents from the last match, however, neither of them have been able to perform as per expectations. Corey Anderson finally found some runs after missing out consistently and he would want to carry on forward in the same manner. Kyle Mayers put on a great all-round show as he scored 22 and bagged a couple with the ball.

Jonathan Carter needs to the up the ante real soon as he has nothing to show after all these chances. Ashley Nurse looked good for his 25 in the last match though surprisingly, he was not given the ball. After a hat-trick of cameos, skipper Jason Holder missed out with the bat, however, he bowled extremely well.

Rashid Khan had an okay outing as he did not score with the bat and got only one wicket in his spell. Mitchell Santner went expensive and wicket-less, however, he is expected to make way given his abilities. Raymon Reifer and Hayden Walsh Jr have not been too impressive and would want to get some wickets under their belt.
