The Tridents will be keen for a victory with time slipping out of their hands whereas Riders will want to continue with their dominance to make six from six.
The 17th match of CPL T20 will see Barbados Tridents clashing with the Trinbago Knight Riders on Saturday, August 29 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. The three-time champs, Trinbago Knight Riders, have been ruling the roost and have been having a dream run with five wins in five encounters.
They have exploited their resources with perfection and have gelled together extremely well as a unit with different people taking responsibilities every time. The last time these two teams met, Riders slammed 185 at the loss of three wickets- the highest total of CPL 2020 thus far- and won the game by 19 runs.
In this match, Kieron Pollard’s charges are coming after a 7-wicket win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors. There were many positives for the team as Khary Pierre took 3 wickets courtesy which the Warriors were restricted to a bland 112/7. Darren Bravo and Tim Seifert- who did not get many chances to bat before- stitched an important partnership as they took their team home with a couple of overs to spare.
The defending champions, Barbados Tridents, have had a quiet season with only two wins from five league matches. However, they will turn up in Port of Spain with some momentum as they won their last encounter against the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Kyle Mayers shone in their victory with the bat as on the back of his stunning 59-ball 85 that included a massive 8 sixes, the team posted 148 runs. The bowlers had a rememberable outing as Mitchell Santner, Rashid Khan, Jason Holder, and Raymon Reifer all bagged a couple of wickets while Hayden Walsh Jr got one. Through these exploits, the Tridents restricted their opponents to 112/9 before winning the match by a considerable margin of 36 runs.
The Tridents will be keen for a victory with time slipping out of their hands whereas Riders will want to continue with their dominance to make six from six.
Pitch and conditions
The spinners have been making a hubbub in the tournament and the expectations are not any different in this match either. Chasing has been the norm this season although this wicket is expected to remain the same throughout the game and any score close 140 should be competitive. There are chances of rain, however, a full match is on the cards.
Playing combinations
Trinbago Knight Riders
Lendl Simmons failed to contribute too much against the Warriors, however, he would be happy for he got a start at least. Tion Webster, who played a decent hand in the last game, is expected to open in the case of Sunil Narine’s unavailability. Colin Munro registered a golden duck after a couple of good knocks and he must look to score runs this time.
The partnership between Darren Bravo and Tim Seifert was crucial in the chase and they both looked good for their individual knocks of 26 and 39 respectively. Alongside Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo, they are expected to form the middle-order.
Khary Pierre, who was the pick with 3 wickets, would want to continue contributing with the ball. Fawad Ahmad went wicket-less in the last game though he was economical in his spell of 3 overs. Ali Khan has been in good nick, however, in the last game he bowled only a single over. Sikandar Raza might get a game in Narine’s absence.
Predicted XI- Lendl Simmons, Tion Webster, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, Tim Seifert (WK), Kieron Pollard (C), Dwayne Bravo, Sikandar Raza/Sunil Narine, Fawad Ahmed, Khary Pierre, Ali Khan
Bench- Amir Jangoo, Sikandar Raza/Sunil Narine, Akeal Hosein, Pravin Tambe, Anderson Philip, Jayden Seales
Barbados Tridents
Johnson Charles and Shai Hope have clearly not been amongst the runs and they had another failed outing in the game against Tallawahs. Kyle Mayers was right on the money during his smoking knock of 85 runs and he was largely responsible for whatever his team scored in the game with the bat. He must be given more opportunities up the order after the show he put up in the last game.
Corey Anderson got an extremely poor start to the tournament before getting some runs in a couple of matches. However, he failed to click again last time. Skipper Jason Holder might have disappointed with the ball a few times but he has played a number of cameos with the bat and will look to repeat the same.
Mitchell Santner made an important contribution with the bat before taking a couple of wickets with the ball and he is expected to play certainly. Rashid Khan also bagged a couple and is an obvious choice given his abilities and the conditions in Port of Spain. Raymon Reifer bowled an economical spell and got two wickets and he should be in the eleven apart from Hayden Walsh Jr
Predicted XI- Johnson Charles, Shai Hope (WK), Corey Anderson, Jason Holder (C), Mitchell Santner, Nyeem Young, Kyle Mayers, Rashid Khan, Hayden Walsh, Raymon Reifer, Ashley Nurse
Bench- Jonathan Carter, Shamarh Brooks, Shayan Jahangir, Justin Greaves, Keon Harding, Joshua Bishop
