CPL 2020: Match 28, Jamaica Tallawahs vs Barbados Tridents - Preview, Live Streaming, Timings, Predicted XI, Stats, Pitch Report & more

The 28th match of the CPL 2020 is scheduled to be played between the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Barbados Tridents, on 5th September, at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad.

From coming into this tournament as the defending champions to making a hat-trick of below-100 totals and facing back-to-back defeats, the fortunes of Barbados Tridents have turned upside down from the last year. Their scores in the last three games read 89/7, 92 all out, and 89/9 and that is a testament to their dire state of affairs. They have lost 7 out of the 9 matches this year and quite unsurprisingly, are reeling at the fifth spot in the points table.

The Tridents looked clueless in front of Imran Tahir and Romario Shephard in the last game as they bagged 3 wickets each. Only a couple of days ago from this encounter, the Warriors had humdled them out for 92 and the story was not different this time. Much to Tridents’ disappointment, they ended 3 runs shorter than that shameful outing and their opponents chased the target in merely 13.5 overs with 6 wickets in hands.

Jamaica Tallawahs, on the other hand, are placed at the 4th spot in the points tally with 3 wins and 4 losses. Only 5.4 overs of play were completed in their last game against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots when rain interrupted play and the call for abandonment was made by the officials as they were unable to attempt a resumption. The two points being shared equally meant a qualification for the Tallawahs as both the teams below them could not go past them.

In Saturday’s clash, the Tridents will look to salvage their pride whereas the Tallawahs, knowing that they are the weakest team in the top four, will look to proceed with some momentum in the next stage.

Pitch and conditions

This being the second encounter of the day, the spinners will get even more assistance. The ball should come onto the bat well and the batsmen who could apply themselves will get results for sure. As has been seen in the last few encounters, the teams chasing have won the match more often, and the ideal choice, therefore, would be to field first.

The problems for the Tridents have only increased in the last three games as their batting unit has failed miserably. Johnson Charles, who was paired with Justin Greaves in the last game, will be seen performing his duties at the top whereas Shai Hope, who has had a terrible season, might make way for Shamarh Brooks. Jonathan Carter and Ashley Nurse do not have much to show, however, they are expected to play.

Kyle Mayers has been one of the positives for them as he has performed with both bat and ball, however skipper Jason Holder has not been able to do so. After striking well with the bat in the initial matches, he seems to have lost his form. Though with the ball, he has been spot on.  Rashid Khan and Mitchell Santner have been performing consistently and have even mitigated the team’s humiliation by contributing with the bat in the last three games.

Opener Glenn Phillips has been amongst the runs and has shown brilliant consistency. However, Chadwick Walton’s case has been the exact opposite despite getting innumerable chances. Nkumrah Bonner has been tried alongside Phillips as an opener and he has been lukewarm at that position. Jermaine Blackwood has played some crucial knocks at No. 3 and he will look to continue doing the same.

Asif Ali, who has not clicked in the last few games, is expected to form the middle-order alongside Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite. The two men from the West Indies have been slightly inconsistent, though Russell has found his form through a couple of knocks after a cold start. Veerasammy Permaul has gotten some wickets under his belt to show and he is expected to play alongside the spin duo of Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Sandeep Lamichchane, who both have not failed to perform thus far.
